European Parliament asks Venezuela to release all political prisoners

This Thursday, March 14, the plenary session of the European Parliament urged Venezuela to “immediately” release all political prisoners and asked the European Union (EU) to increase sanctions against Nicolás Maduro and his administration.

In a resolution approved by 497 votes in favor, 22 against and 27 abstentions, MEPs deplored that “prisoners are detained in conditions that contravene the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners.”

Parliament demanded the immediate unconditional release of all political prisoners and people arbitrarily detained, as well as the full restoration of their rights, elimpulso.com reports.

Likewise, he urged the Venezuelan government to “cease its policy of repression and attacks against civil society and the opposition.”

The MEPs promoted this resolution in particular due to the situation of the Spanish activist Rocío San Miguel, detained more than a month ago accused of allegedly being related to a “conspiracy” against Nicolás Maduro.
